exploring the collective behaviour of Hackney Wick

Observation: The Last Leg

This a short video showing the last leg of the Great Newham 10K Run, just before the runners entered the Olympic Stadium to cross the finishing line. We observed the wide range of reactions to the presence of the camera: some waving, some speeding up, some ignoring it entirely. The response to this control mechanism occasionally triggered collective behaviour – one person waving led to a ripple of waves in others following behind. The diversity of runners was also noted, in terms of age, race, running style… this tiny stretch of road acting as a microcosm of the surrounding area.
